PowerCampus Redesign


Pixel Commerce was hired by Ellucian, an information technology company, to redesign their PowerCampus software. PowerCampus is used by over 200 colleges and universities, so our end goal was to enhance the experience through mobile first designs, visually uplifting the interface and improving their core functions UX.

Auditing the old

Before we tackled a redesign, we needed to look at the old designs and understand where the gaps were. After the initial audit, we came to these primary conclusions about the old designs and limitations.

The outcome:

  • Designs were not responsive
    Large segments of any software user today is primarily engaging through their phone, and students are no exception. From checking their grades, to registering for classes, students needed access to the platform from their phones. And the updated design needed to not only account for heavy mobile use, but to center it above a desktop model.
  • Reminiscent of the 90’s
    The old design made use of gradients for visual designs, which felt dated and out of use. The pages looked as if they were built with tables and they had rigid, rather than responsive, ways of displaying information
  • No personalized experiences
    Users didn’t get a personalized experience that directed them to the pertinent information. Information was hard to access or come by, and User frustration was common during the old design

Creating the new

The dashboard

The dashboard is the entry point for Users. The previous design didn’t give the Users the appropriate notifications to take action, or in the right direction. In the new interface designed by Pixel Commerce, we created a calendar and a notification system that would push alerts to the Users of time sensitive activities, such as signing up for classes.

Class registration

Class registration is arguably the most important feature on the application. It effects the future of a student’s academic path. The previous iteration of the software featured a “Cart” style system, where classes were collected and placed into a student’s cart. This was confusing, as selecting a class did not secure a position, only selecting it for the cart function.

The new design interface was reworked to operate more effectively on mobile devices, with a bit of a social flair added. Now, the software allows Users to enroll in classes that their friends are also enrolling it, dynamically updating the list according to the search function.

Degree requirements

Degree requirements were another feature used heavily by Users, as it allowed current and prospective students to see what was needed of them to graduate. The old design feature was cluttered with information and hard to understand. However, the new design by Pixel Commerce, is sleek, easy to read and accessible.

To enhance the experience of the entire product, we set out to redesign every single flow, for every single User type. From student, to faculty and university staff, Pixel Commerce uplifted and improved PowerCampus to new heights. Mobile first designs definitely saved the day for PowerCampus.
